AT25: From the Desktop to the Web: The Evolution of Testing as Software Becomes a Service PDF Print E-mail
Software as a Service (Saas) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) are more than just buzz-words now: they are key parts of the undeniable trend that software is moving to a service-based role.  The nature of software testing by necessity must evolve to accommodate this growing world of online services.  Testing may have been an afterthought for many early services, but with the wider adoption of services in the enterprise and consumer markets, testing web services is now a necessity for any serious service. The move from Desktop to Web Services testing is one recently undertaken by my team as one of the first web services initiatives within Symantec.  This paper will discuss the differences between testing desktop software and web services, the pros and cons of shifting to web services, as well as the changes and challenges associated with moving the team (and the company) from testing desktop software to testing web services.  This paper will also discuss what the new challenges are in the area of testing web services, and will speculate on the future of testing in this area.
